The early days of this family business
In 1925 Martti Vaara (Pirkko Stenros’ father) and his brothers were among the first in Finland to set up a factory, in Lahti, to mass produce domestic furniture. Business was interrupted during the war years and following the war there was a need to increase capacity, resulting in a move in 1940 to larger premises in the parish of Muurame. The company’s name at the time was the Muurame furniture factory, the origin of the name of today’s Muurame trademark. In 1964 Muurame Oy moved back to Lahti region, this time to Hollola. At the moment company premises are located in Nastola, 13 km from Lahti.
The first Moduli
With the birth of her first child in 1954 Pirkko Stenros embarked on a long career designing modern, minimalist children’s furniture. The first product was a child’s bed, designed on a child-sized scale. The child’s bed needed a night stand, and this was the impetus for the two-drawer Moduli Kaksonen 420 drawer unit, still in production today. The addition of a third drawer created the Moduli Kolmonen 430 unit. Children could even climb on top of it to see out of the window and look out at the big wide world. Over the decades, the Moduli range has been extended, while always staying true to its modular concept, which means you can always combine, extend and add to the modules you already own.
